Albert

Albert – Gallery

The town of Albert was an entrance point to the front line for the Australian Divisions that fought in the Somme battles of 1916. Consequently the Australian troops became very familiar with the statue of Madonna and Child that hung ‘by a thread’ from the steeple of the bombed basilica. In honour of Australian Olympic champion swimmer Fanny Durack, the statue was named ‘Fanny’, due to the resemblance of a swimmer diving at the start of a race.
