Flanders 17 October 1917
Your nice interesting letters continue to find me in far away France and Belgium. Glad to know you are all keeping well and doing well. Continue to write your letters are much appreciated.
I am fairly well but nothing extraordinary.
Remember me to all and be as cheerful as possible under the circumstances. I wish you all as happier a Xmas as possible, and a brighter New Year.
Yours with love and best wishes, JM.
The Third Battle of Ypres – July to October 1917
Possibly the darkest period of time for all five Australian Divisions. For just a few kilometres of ground – ridges to the east of Ypres – this series of battles were fought in knee deep mud. The author of the postcard had most likely taken part in one or more of the battles, and the tone of this letter reflects his hardship, and what appears to be the earlier loss of someone in Eva’s family.
